Fine needle aspiration (fine needle biopsy)

Fine needle aspiration is excellent for diagnosing masses in the neck. After local anaesthesia, a very thin needle is passed through the mass in a fan shape to remove tiny pieces of tissue, for example from the thyroid gland. A special laboratory evaluates these samples.
